During the European Waste Reduction Week, our European Environment Agency MLW (Marine Litter Watch) Marine Litter Monitoring was held in the area between the Blue Flag awarded beaches in Istanbul-Şile and 1 km from the non-award-winning Uzunkum beach. Şile Municipality Deputy Mayor, Soner Berksan accompanied the event, which was attended by Şile Municipality Directorate of Environmental Protection and Control and Survey Project Manager. Among all kinds of waste left by picnickers, bread caught our attention! Out of the 571 pieces of waste we found, 546 were plastic, and this made us very sad. Also; 120 Polystyrene products,111 plastic caps, 96 shopping bags, beverage bottles, beverage cups, foam sponge, and rope and cord, were the most common wastes we found. In addition to these, we also encountered wastes such as diapers, syringes, lighters, combs, cosmetics, medicine containers, etc. All were plotted and recorded on European Environment Agency marine litter maps. In the same application area, we will work in similar ways 4 times this year. We are waiting for the news of those who want to join us in our efforts to protect the environment and leave a clean world for future generations!
